How Bean Grading Affects The Flavor Of Your Coffee
High Altitude Specialty Coffee uses only the finest, highest graded beans in the world which means that they have been through multiple levels of grading. Once in the plantation, once at the importers, again upon entering the roasting facility and finally after being roasted. This makes these coffee beans the finest and also incredibly rare with only 1 bean in every billion being considered perfect enough to use. Size, structure and color are all regulated to create a more uniform roast and to remove aftertaste, acidity and the unwanted negative flavor that comes from imperfect beans. Unlike most grading processes these beans are dry processed and not floated in water which can again lead to unwanted qualities occurring during maturation of the green bean.

Rocky Mountain Roastery in Fraser, Colorado scored 90 points for its Doug E Fresh blend of coffee in the much vaunted Coffee Review rating. Use a Bean Vacuum to Store Your Coffee

Use a Bean Vacuum to Store Your Coffee

There are many myths surrounding coffee storage, which I would love to clear up for you. Truthfully, you do need to be very particular in the way that you store your coffee beans, and please do not tell me that you are still buying the pre-ground variety.

When coffee is freshly ground, it can begin to go stale within a half-hour, meaning that if you are purchasing it pre-ground at the grocery store, then it will definitely be stale. If you want to preserve the best flavors and decadent aromas in your Java, then you do need to purchase freshly roasted coffee beans. The shelf life of coffee is 10 to 14 days, so for the best taste, consider purchasing it freshly from an online website where the beans are roasted directly before they are shipped. Unless you live next to an artisan coffee roaster to give you fresh beans, then this is your best option by far.

If you do not properly store your coffee beans from that point, then they have the opportunity to oxidize and immediately become bitter.

This is also why it is important to focus on the way that you store your coffee beans so that they can remain fresh and flavorful for as long as possible. This is where the Bean Vac comes into play. This is a handy device that will remove all air from your coffee bean storage, which is exactly what you need to make sure that they do not lose their freshness from oxidation. You may have tried to vacuum pack your beans yourself, only to find that it is incredibly difficult. There is no foolproof way to remove air completely from your bag of coffee beans to protect them during storage, unless you are using the Bean Vac, that is.

This is a device sold for , and it will hold a full pound of coffee beans.

The lid seals and locks tightly, and there is a vacuum pump that will suck all air out of the container. This device runs on four AA batteries, and it also can be used to store other perishable items, like chocolate or cookies. This brings me to my point, which is that you do need to keep in mind that coffee is definitely a perishable item, so you should not allow it to sit around for more than two weeks at a time.

You do need to hold your coffee in the highest regard, so it is best to only buy as much coffee as you can drink for up to two weeks. Again, make sure that you are freshly grinding your coffee beans before you brew for the best flavor profile available to you, which you definitely will have because of the convenience in guaranteed freshness through the Bean Vac. Coffee lovers everywhere will enjoy the use of this handy vacuum canister to store their coffee beans in, which is just one more reason to brew up a cup of Joe any day!

Are You a Carrot, an Egg Or a Coffee Bean?

Are You a Carrot, an Egg Or a Coffee Bean?

Some time ago, the MLM Company I joined did send an email around asking: are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean? Of course I’m neither one of them, but the funny title caught my attention and I read the story.

The story was about a young woman who was struggling in her life and went to visit her mother to tell her how things were so hard for her. Every time the young woman solved one problem, another one arose – she was ready to give up.

The mother listened to her daughter and took her to the kitchen. There she placed carrots in a pot, added water and put it on the stove. Then she took some eggs, placed them in a pot, added water and put the second pot on the stove. Then the mother took ground coffee beans, put them in a third pot, added some water and placed it on the stove as well. The tree pots were sitting on the stove boiling, while the two women sat quietly in the kitchen.

After about twenty minutes the mother turned off the burners.

She fished the carrots out and placed them on a plate, then she took the eggs out and placed them in a bowl and at last she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup. The mother turned to her daughter and asked her “What do you see?” “Carrots, eggs and coffee,” replied the daughter. The mother brought her closer and ordered her to feel the carrots; the daughter noticed they had become soft. Then the mother asked her daughter to take the eggs and break them, and the daughter observed the hard-boiled eggs. Finally, the mother asked her to smell and sip the coffee.

The point was that all three objects had faced the same adversity – boiling water – but each reacted differently. First the carrots were strong and hard but after being boiled they became soft and weak.

The eggs had been fragile, but after sitting through the hot water, their soft inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique: after they were exposed to the boiling water, they had changed the water.

Similar to the carrots, the eggs and the ground coffee beans which were placed in boiling water, humans react differently if trials knock at their doors. Like the carrots some seem strong, but with pain and adversity, wilt and loose their strength. Others are like eggs, having a passive heart and a fluid spirit, and after experiencing hardship and frustrations become hardened and insensitive to others. Few are like coffee beans, which actually changed the hot water, releasing their fragrance and flavour. With painful circumstances rising around them, those who are like coffee beans became better and even managed to change the situation.

Although I was opposed to the idea first, I decided to become a coffee bean. To help me remember this, a coffee bean is sitting on my desk, uplifting me whenever I look at it.

Exactly What You Must Recognize Concerning Your Coffee Bean Grinder

Exactly What You Must Recognize Concerning Your Coffee Bean Grinder

The main decision to think about before purchasing a coffee bean grinder is whether to buy the less expensive blade grinder or a more expensive burr plate grinder. Blade grinders are most popular for first time users, are less expensive than burr plate grinders and can be found at most stores. Burr plate grinders are usually sold at specialty stores, cost a bit more but produce a finer, more consistent ground of coffee. In order to purchase the correct one, check with your coffee maker to see what type of coffee ground it uses.

The difference between a blade grinder and a burr blade grinder are the way they actually grind the coffee beans. A blade grinder slices the beans into smaller and smaller particles while a burr plate grinder actually pulverizes the beans into a more powdery consistency. This makes the grounds to be more consistent and smoother.

In order to maximize the effectiveness of a blade grinder, a few jostles to the grinder while grinding can help keep larger pieces of coffee beans from becoming stuck in places that the blades can miss. This is not necessary with a burr grinder which usually have a number of settings that enable the beans to be ground to perfection.

Burr grinders are easy to use with just the press of a button. The button on the blade grinder needs to be depressed intermittently in order to get the beans moving around inside the container. If a coarse grind is preferred, then the button should be pressed up to ten seconds at two second intervals. A medium grind would be ten to fourteen seconds with a two to three second interval and for a medium grind, and keeping the intervals at two to three seconds for up to twenty seconds for a smaller, finer grind. The amounts can be adjusted for personal taste.

A coarse grind is usually the desired consistency called for when using a classic pot, drip and plunger types of coffee makers. A fine grind is what would be used in the making of a cup of espresso. After the coffee is ground, you can usually measure out the scoops of coffee and then put them into the coffee filter. The ratio is usually two to one, one tablespoon of coffee to two cups of water. If making six cups of coffee, then three tablespoons of coffee would be placed into the coffee filter and six cups of water would be poured into the water chamber. If using a burr plate grinder, many come with measurements and there is no need to use a tablespoon prior to pouring the coffee into the coffee maker.

Freshly ground whole beans retain their flavor for just a couple of days after grinding, but if used immediately the difference between all ready ground coffee and fresh is noticeable. Ground coffee purchased in a grocery store may have been sitting on a shelf for days if not longer and unless dated, there is no way to know exactly when the coffee was ground. While grinding coffee at home takes just a couple of minutes longer, it is easy to grind the correct amount for that day or grind enough for the next day as well and knowing exactly when it was done.

Grinding beans at home is really the only way to guarantee the freshest cup of coffee. After using a coffee bean grinder to grind fresh coffee beans at home, and tasting how much better fresh ground coffee is it will be difficult to go back to purchasing all ready ground coffee again. And while a blade grinder is a good initial investment, easy to use and portable, a burr plate grinder may be something to consider in the next future. A burr plate grinder can take the freshly ground coffee consumer to the next level of coffee enjoyment.

Ways to determine the Coffee Bean Shelf Life

If you want to have a consistent delicious taste in your cup of coffee, then you must focus on the quality of the coffee beans that you are using. First of all, do not think of using pre-ground coffee if you want it to taste decent in any way. The absolute best way to enjoy your Coffee is by grinding it freshly directly before you brew it so that you can ensure the quality in taste and flavor. Don’t purchase too many fresh coffee beans at one time because they will immediately begin to lose their freshness.

It is best to purchase freshly roasted beans through Online retailer or directly from a roaster in your area, and only to purchase an amount that is enough for about a week. Freshly roasted coffee beans are having a shelf life of 10 to 14 days, so it is important that you strictly adhere to that so you can trust that your flavor will be the best.

Another factor to consider is aged coffee beans, which are green coffee beans that have been stored in a warehouse for 2 to 3 years to enable their flavors to develop more deeply.

This is a fantastic choice if you want to have an even better taste to your brew because the aging will cause the beans to lose the acidity and increase the body in the flavor profile for a much more complex taste. If you are purchasing freshly roasted beans, then you should store them in a vacuum sealed container in a cool location so that they are not tainted or corrupted. Never store your fresh coffee beans in freezer because that will completely deplete them of moisture.

As you may have noticed, freshly roasted coffee beans will be incredibly shiny because they are covered in essential oils.

These essential oils comes from the roasting process where they are released, and that is what gives freshly roasted coffee beans their amazing flavors. If you freeze the coffee beans, then they will be dried out so that the essential oils will no longer provide the rich flavors that they once did.

Once you have freshly ground the coffee beans, they will remain fresh for about two hours. This is a very short time frame, so you should take that into consideration when you are thinking to buy pre-ground coffee beans because there is absolutely no way that they can be fresh. The reason for grinding the coffee beans just before brewing is to maintain their freshness.

With these simple steps, you can keep your coffee beans fresher so that your cup of coffee will taste even better every time that you brew. In truth, it only requires a few more seconds to freshly grind your beans, and it will pay off in large quantities of flavor!
